Rep. John Conyers hospitalized amid sexual harassment allegations
Congressman John Conyers, D-Michigan, the longest running member in the House of Representatives, was admitted to the hospital with an unknown ailment. Conyers, 88, is at the center of sexual harassment claims.
Conyers was in the Detroit area at the time he was taken to the hospital, CNN reports but details about his medical condition remain unclear. The venerated politician is facing several allegations of sexual misconduct by former female staffers. The House Ethics Committee announced last week it has opened an investigation into allegations against Conyers.
Marion Brown, 61, said the Democratic congressman propositioned her for sex multiple times over more than a decade. She said she stayed on the job because she needed to support her family and found the work rewarding.
“It was sexual harassment … violating my body,” she said. “Propositioning me. Inviting me to hotels with the guise of discussing business and then propositioning me … for sex.”
Conyers, meanwhile, was in a Detroit hospital, political consultant and family friend Sam Riddle told The Associated Press. Riddle said the information came from Conyers’ wife, Monica. He said Conyers was hospitalized for stress-related issues.
“I just spoke with (Conyers’ wife) Monica Conyers on the phone, and we’d like to let you know that the congressman is resting comfortably at an area hospital,” Riddle said on video in a tweet shared by a WXYZ-TV, Detroit, reporter. “He’s doing OK; as well as can be expected for a gentleman that’s approaching 90 years of age.”
