Yuna Qian, Sound Engineer

Who is Yuna Qian and what do you do in the entertainment industry?

I am a sound engineer currently working in the field of film score in the Hollywood film industry. I work for the film composers in the post-production studio. I have worked as a recording and mixing engineer in the recording studio prior to stepping my foot into film. I think sound engineers can come in many guises, but none of those are mutually exclusive. For me it’s always about music.

How do you feel you stand out more than other sound engineers in the music and film industry?

Thanks to my 2 years of grad school at Johns Hopkins University, I have gained a solid audio engineering background and it really comes in handy when I encounter problems at work. Sound engineers are ‘problem solvers’, because we have this in-depth understanding of the audio technology, physics and acoustics. Those are all crucial and the very basic fundamentals of what makes up an audio engineer.

As you probably noticed, as a female sound engineer originally from China, it is truly rare of a woman in the United States to lead behind the scenes in the entertainment industry. My multi-cultural background and also being known as a ‘sound chick’, has given me a unique and special view when it comes to music. I have been influenced with music from different countries and backgrounds and for that alone can make me more creative and become an inspiration for others in the studio.

As a music engineer, what is your main role in bringing a music/film project to life?

As a music engineer, I deal specifically with the technical and the mechanical aspects of music and sound during the processes of recording, mixing, and re-production. As a sound engineer for film composers, the role is to make magic happen and making sure everything works during the scoring process. If the film composer is the painter, the engineer is the one who mixed the color on the palette and carefully chooses the right brush for the painter.

What films have you recently worked on?

I have helped assist work on The Angry Birds Movie, Captain America: Civil War and Jack Reacher: Never Go Back.

How has working with Henry Jackman, Leading film composer of Captain America and X-Men First class help you grow in your engineer career?

It was a mind-blowing experience for me working for Henry. I had the chance to see how a high-paced film production studio worked on a daily basis and I was constantly amazed by how many people have contributed to one project in order to bring it to life. It was definitely a valuable learning experience for me. I have learned so much about my role as an engineer on how to successfully assist a film composer.

Where do you see your career in the next year?

I want to continue to explore my career as a sound engineer in the Hollywood film score industry. I’m looking forward to working on more film scoring projects and learn more from the composers by assisting them in their work. Again, as I’ve stated before, it’s really all about the music and I’m excited for my career to transcend before my eyes.
