Celebrated comedian and human rights activist Dick Gregory, 84, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2017, in Washington, D.C. Gregory, who is survived by his wife, Lillian, and 10 children, will be laid to rest in less than two weeks.
Here’s the proposed home-going schedule that will celebrate Gregory’s life and honor his contributions to civil rights, according to the Chicago Crusader:
-Thursday, Sept. 14, a limited, private viewing of Gregory will be held on the Howard University campus in Washington, D.C. The time of the event has not been determined.
-Friday, Sept. 15, Gregory will lie in repose at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial that sits on the Tidal Basin just off the National Mall from 8 p.m. to midnight. Surviving members of King’s family and Gregory’s family will lead a wreath-laying ceremony. During his lifetime, Gregory was a close friend of the slain Civil Rights leader.
-Saturday, Sept. 16, a New Orleans-style funeral march will head down the U Street Corridor/Black Broadway.
-Gregory’s funeral will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 17 at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts Concert Hall in the nation’s capital. After the funeral, a reception will follow at 5:30 p.m. on the rooftop terrace.

The outpouring of love and condolences continues to be overwhelming, but incredibly therapeutic and appreciated. No degree of planning prepares one for this. My father, Mr. Dick Gregory’s memorial services will be very much so public and reflective of the way he lived his life. This will be an absolute celebration of a life never compromised, befitting of this legend. He was a man of the people and the people are invited to his service(s). My father loved Washington, DC and the DC metropolitan area is where we will call folks to gather and pay forward the love as we celebrate his life.
Alongside our partners, we have been meticulously planning, grieving and laughing simultaneously. We are thankful for the incredible support from Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser’s office, Prince George’s County, Maryland Executive Rushern Baker’s office and City of Praise Family Ministries, to name a few. Everyone’s eagerness to plan and facilitate has truly been heartwarming.
