Damon Dash Talks About His New Venture “Dash Diabetes Network”

Damon Dash wants to keep people educated about diabetes and inspire those living with the illness. Jay-Z’s former business partner Damon Dash was “happy” when he was first diagnosed with diabetes as a teen because he thought he was dying.

The Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder has been living with type 1 diabetes since the age of 15, and he recently launched the Dash Diabetes Network to provide information and support to others struggling with the blood sugar condition, because he knows how scary it can be when faced with a health issue you know nothing about.

Recalling his initial fears before his own diagnosis, he tells Us Weekly magazine, “I lost a lot of weight, people started to talk in school, all this was happening and I was scared to go to the doctor because I thought I was going to get the death sentence, and I was like, ‘Damn. I’m only 15. I just started having fun!’.

“But when they told me it was diabetes, I was like, ‘Yes! I’d take that any day…’ I was happy to have diabetes, you understand?” Dash has maintained his positive attitude towards his illness ever since, using it as inspiration to push himself to achieve more in his career – and he wants his fellow diabetes sufferers to follow his example.

“The main thing that I want to showcase is I did all of these things,” he says. “I had a career, I have a career, I make history daily and I’m diabetic, so diabetes is not what stops anything… I almost think that once I found out I was diabetic it made me want to live life more because I’m so appreciative of life. I thought I was I was gonna die, so I was like, ‘I need to get everything.'”
