Arizona TV reporters Krystin Lisaius and Somchai Lisaius charged after cocaine found in baby’s system
An Oro Valley couple known around Tucson as on-air personalities is facing drug charges after tests revealed there was cocaine in their baby’s system.
Oro Valley police say 26-year-old Krystin Lisaius and husband Somchai Lisaius were indicted on charges of possession of a dangerous drug, drug paraphernalia and child abuse on June 9.
CBS affiliate KOLD reports that authorities said they found less than 2 grams of “white powder or white residue” and other paraphernalia at the couple’s home. Both were TV reporters in Tucson. Krystin Lisaius worked at KGUN-TV while 42-year-old Somchai Lisaius was a reporter for Tucson News Now. It appears they don’t work at those stations anymore.
Riley said the baby was taken to the hospital on May 15 after being breast-fed and appearing to be in distress. Test revealed cocaine in the four-month-old’s body.
The baby is living with a relative.
“It would be a gross, gross injustice (with) even the mention of prison time,”
said Michael Piccarreta, the couple’s attorney. “I anticipate they will demonstrate that they have learned a very hard, embarrassing lesson and that this will become a footnote in their life, not a chapter.”
They made their first appearance in court on Monday. The parents complained their child was “wabbly,” had “became limp” and that her “eyes were rolling” into the back of her head, Tucson Weekly reported.
They did not allow the hospital to draw blood, according to the online publication. After leaving the facility against the hospital recommendation, they agreed to take the child to another medical center. However, they again refused a toxicology test for the child. Both parents eventually admitted to using cocaine after tests showed the drug in the baby’s body, according to Tucson Weekly, but Krystin said she did not believe the baby would be harmed if 12 hours had passed before breast-feeding the infant.
The parents were indicted on charges of possession of a dangerous drug, drug paraphernalia and child abuse. They made their first court appearance on Monday, pleading not guilty.
Somchai Lisaius has been fired from his job at KOLD, according to Tucson Weekly. Krystin Lisaius, who has previously worked at KGUN, met her husband when she was an intern at KOLD.
